Lord Viswanath, the name itself shows the specialty and importance as it means the Lord of the Universe, the principal deities of the Hindu religion. He is known as many names and every name describes his great qualities. For the destruction of evil energies, he is known as the God of destruction.

Kashi Viswanath temple in Varanashi, Uttar Pradesh is one of the holiest places in India is located on the bank of the river Ganga. This Jyotirlinga is one of the manifestations of Lord Shiva among 12 Jyotirlingas. This jyotirlinga has a special significance in India.

This place is known as the spiritual capital of India. It was built by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. It is the oldest temple in India, but it has reconstructed many a time after the demolition by Mughal Emperors. The height of the temple is almost 250ft.

The Jyotirlinga

There are many temples inside the Kashi Viswanath temple. The temple is made up of marbles and the dome of the temple contains pure gold, hence it is also called the golden temple. The golden dome was made by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1835. The whole text of Bhagavad Gita have written on the walls of the temple. Also, many Hindu scriptures have written which enhances the beauty of the temple.

This place depicts, when Lord Brahma and Lord Bishnu had argued with each other for the supremacy between them, Lord Shiva came with an endless pillar of light to test them and to identify their superiority. Lord Bishnu had taken the Barah Avtar while Lord Brahma had taken the Swan Avtar. Lord Brahma went towards the top while Lord Bishnu dipped to the depth. Finally, Lord Bishnu came with accepting his defeat on the other hand Lord Brahma came with holding a Ketaki flower as a witness for touching the crown of the pillar. Lord Shiva got disappointed with Brshma’s lie and cursed him that he cannot be worshiped ever. So there is no temple for Lord Brahma. After that, this place is popularly known as the city of light.

The Dome of the temple

The major festivals celebrated here are Mahashivaratri, Nag Panchami, Navaratri, Makar Sankranti, etc. Many famous saints have visited this holy place. It is a saying that visiting this place once in a lifetime opens the door towards moksha. Its a belief that Lord shiva chants the mantra of salvation in the ears of those people who die here. It is one of the popular pilgrimage sites.
